A First in the Maldives! Soneva Jani Awarded OECM Recognition
It is the first resort in the Maldives to gain this accreditation, further proving that hospitality development and ecological conservation can thrive hand in hand.
Soneva Jani has recently been officially awarded OECM (Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures) recognition by the Maldives’ Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, becoming the first resort across the Maldives to earn this designation.
This recognition consolidates Soneva’s leading position in the Maldives’ 30x30 Target initiative. The 30x30 Target originates from the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which aims to conserve at least 30 percent of the world’s land, inland waters and oceans by 2030. An OECM refers to a geographically defined space outside protected areas that is governed effectively to deliver long-term in-situ biodiversity conservation.
The newly designated OECM area at Soneva Jani spans 0.41 square kilometres on the eastern side of Medhufaru Island, encompassing coral reefs, beaches and mangrove habitats. The designation follows a year-long process of ecological surveys, monitoring, spatial mapping and documentation. Led by the Soneva Maldives Conservation & Sustainable Development team, the work received support from the Waitt Foundation alongside operational collaboration from the Soneva Jani team.
The Soneva Jani OECM area hosts numerous threatened species and serves as a vital nesting ground for the critically endangered hawksbill turtle and green turtle. Mangroves and wetlands within the zone perform multiple functions, including coastline protection, carbon sequestration, water resource regulation and maintaining habitat connectivity. Neil Gallagher, Chief Executive Officer of Soneva Group, states that hospitality and ecological conservation are not mutually exclusive; sustained conservation implementation can foster a symbiotic relationship between the two.
This designation signifies Soneva Jani’s long-term commitment to advancing ecological conservation. The OECM status will be reviewed after five years, with ongoing annual monitoring and report submissions in the interim. Dr. Johanna Leonhardt, Operations Director of Soneva Maldives Conservation & Sustainable Development, states that environmental protection must not remain merely on paper. Measurable evidence will be produced year after year to demonstrate management effectiveness, illustrating how tourism can support effective conservation in the Maldives.
This recognition marks a milestone, setting a global benchmark for the luxury hospitality sector. It confirms that tourism development and ecological conservation are not mutually exclusive, and that responsible tourism promotion can deliver financial support for long-term environmental protection.
